On November 24, 2020, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) released the new AAAS fellows in 2020, and three alumni of Zhejiang University, including YAO Nan, alumni of the ISEE, were elected.

YAO Nan graduated from ISEE of Zhejiang University in 1982. He obtained a master's degree in atomic physics from the Department of physics of Idaho State University in 1984 and a doctor's degree in condensed matter physics and electron microscopy from Arizona State University in 1990. He is currently the director of the center for imaging and analysis at Princeton University. As one of the 25 most cited scholars in the field of electron microscopy in physics and Life Sciences (2017-19), he focus on using advanced imaging, diffraction, spectroscopy and in-situ technology, combined with computer simulation, to conduct basic research on the structure, composition and performance of complex materials, so as to apply them to nanotechnology, energy, environment and health. So far, more than 200 research papers have been published, many of which have been published in top academic journals such as science and nature. He has presided over nine international seminars, has been invited to make more than 80 academic reports, applied for three patents and published two English Monographs. He is a member of the editorial board of 12 professional journals, as well as the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of energy (DOE), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), two national laboratories (Oak Ridge and Brookhaven), Austrian Science Foundation, French National Research Institute, European Research Council, Ireland Advisory Committee on research proposals from the science foundation.

AAAS

Founded in 1848, AAAS is the largest scientific society in the world. It has more than 120000 members in more than 90 countries, publishing well-known academic journals such as science. AAAS has 24 professional sections covering natural and social sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, astronomy, agriculture, biology, medicine and so on. Its purpose is to promote science and serve society, that is, to benefit mankind by promoting the development of science and innovation on a global scale. Since 1874, AAAs Committee has annually selected outstanding scientists from its members based on their academic influence and scientific contributions, and awarded them the lifetime honor of members of the American Association for the advancement of science for their extraordinary achievements. Many famous scientists, such as Edison (who invented the electric light), Watson (discovering the double helix structure of DNA), and two Nobel Prize winners in 2020 (Jennifer doudna of the chemistry prize and Charles rice of the physiology or medicine prize), are all members of the American Association for the advancement of science.
